The Grand Canyon and Sedona

My sister and niece were here visiting since the end of last week.  We took day trips to the Grand Canyon and Sedona, and I showed them around old town Scottsdale and a nearby old western town called Cave Creek. I’ve posted up a few pictures to share.  I hope that you enjoy them!

This is one of my favorite places in Arizona.

And Sedona:

My camera doesn’t really capture the brilliance of the red rock, but I hope that you get the idea.

Oak Creek runs through the Red Rock National Park in Sedona.  We took several short hikes around the area:

After we crossed the bridge, we saw a couple of young deer:

When you live in the desert, you always take pictures of water!  Anyhow, the weather was wonderful, in the 70′s or low 80′s the entire time they visited.

I hope that you enjoyed the pictures!

Absence

It’s been busy times around here!  First with Easter, and taxes at the same time, and now I have been getting ready for company that is coming in today.  I was hoping to get a little sewing time in, and I did a little, but nothing to show you completed!

I am so excited to have my sister and niece coming in from Washington.  This will be my sister’s first visit here to Arizona.  So this weekend we will be going up to the Grand Canyon (one of my favorite places to backpack!) and up to Sedona to see the redrocks, and a few places closer to home.

So I won’t have much of a chance to do any sewing, or blogging, until they return home.  Although I may get a few pictures of our trips up.  So stay tuned, and if you don’t hear from me, I’ll be back with a couple of completed sewing projects that I have started and a tutorial the end of next week!

I thought I would show you a couple of pictures from around the yard; the beginning of spring!

Book Review – Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross

Weekend Sewing

Weekend Sewing

I know that there has been more than a few reviews about Heather Ross’s new book, ‘Weekend Sewing’, but I couldn’t let it go by without saying something about it.  I love this book!  I think what really stands out to me about this book is that it is ageless.  What I mean by that is, I find that this is a book that has so many classic items to sew, you can be any age, and any skill level, and still enjoy it.

This book starts out with an introduction, where Heather tells you about her background and how she has come to the place she is today.  She then introduces a section about setting up a place to sew at home and some things to take into consideration when choosing a sewing space.

The rest of the book is divided up into 4 chapters; Home and Away, Dressing Up and Down, Sewing for Kids, and Sewing Basics.

In the first chapter – Home and Away – you will find twelve different projects.  It includes totes, checkbook covers, aprons, tablecloths, slippers, garden gloves and a pup tent just for starters.  She has even included a recipe for Squash Soup and her ‘Favorite Sewing Sounds.’

Chapter 2 is ‘Dressing Up and Down’, with ten different projects.

Saturday-Night Silk-Jersey Set

Saturday-Night Silk-Jersey Set

I think that this is one of my favorites, I can’t wait to make it!  There are several different dresses, a skirt, pajama pants, a blouse, a headscarf and many more items. The pajama pants are for children as well as adults (men and women alike). You could make matching PJ’s for the whole family!

Kimono Dress and Obi Sash

Another dress, the Kimono Dress and Obi Sash.  Very cute and comfortable looking!

In Chapter 3 – Sewing for Kids – there are seven projects. She also has a page of some great ideas for sewing with kids, and a blueberry recipe for babies!

Chapter 3 Contents

Chapter 3 Contents

From bloomers, to a shirt, to a baby blanket, and several other projects.  They are too cute!

Chapter 4 – Sewing Basics – this is where Heather gives you tips on purchasing a machine and what to look for before deciding, choosing fabric and the different types of fabric (how to tell the difference), pattern tips for cutting and marking, sewing tools, cutting tools, measuring and marking tools, miscellaneous tools, and basic sewing techniques. She includes resources with online address on the final pages of this chapter.

Heather has clear instructions through out the book, as well as clear diagrams that are easy to follow if you are someone new to sewing. Or even if you’re not!

At the beginning of each project Heather gives the Sewing Instructions, Finished Dimensions, Materials needed and tips on choosing fabric for that particular project.

Patterns

There are pullout sheets of patterns for the projects included in both the front and the back of the book, that you need to trace onto pattern paper.

I think that this book is very inspiring and goes outside the basic sewing projects that are so easy to find. I highly recommend ‘Weekend Sewing’ for the beginning sewer as well as someone that is looking for lovely things to make, in only a weekend!

Enjoy!
