Joelle Hoverson has written another book, Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts. She is also shop owner of Purl (a knitting store) and Purl Patchwork (a fabric store) in New York. If you aren’t in New York, you can shop Purl online.
This book is about patchwork and quilting, not so much in the traditional sense, but with an updated style for today. Whether you are a beginning sewer or quilter, or experienced, I think that you will find something to love in this book.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section Joelle discusses color and choosing the correct colors to put your project together.
Section two is devoted to the projects, which she divides up into time ranges it takes to complete each of the projects.
There are five different time frames, with six projects in each section. The projects become more complicated as you work your way through the book, starting with patchwork projects and working to hand or machine quilting a quilt.
She shows the completed projects in beautiful color photographs, so you get a clear picture of what the completed item looks like. She provides a material list and step-by-step instruction along with diagrams for each project. She also gives you ‘construction notes’ to assist you in areas that may need more explaination.
Section three includes patchwork & quilting basics. Here Joelle discusses various types of fabrics that you can use, thread, batting and stuffing. She also discusses the tools that she uses to do the projects in the book.
Next she goes into preparing and cutting the fabrics, pinning, machine and hand sewing. The final part of this section she covers machine quilting, hand quilting and tying the quilt, as well as binding. Everything that you need to assemble the quilt.
There is also a section of Recommended Reading and several sources of supplies to complete the projects in the book.
I really enjoyed the book, and I will be using it for incentive and ideas for a long time to come.
I highly recommended Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts whether you are a beginner or have been sewing for years!
